Position: Firefighter/Paramedic
Overview
The City of South Pasadena is accepting applications for Firefighters/Paramedics and for Florida state-certified Firefighters currently enrolled in a Paramedic program. Candidates must complete the FireTEAM exam and possess a valid Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT). Applications remain open until the position is filled.
Starting Salary: $61,938 (Base Salary)
Sign-on Bonus: $7,500 for Paramedics

Department Information
South Pasadena Fire Department operates a single fire station, providing Fire and EMS services to South Pasadena and surrounding areas. Covering a 0.6 square mile area, the department serves a community of approximately 5,200 residents, with a high proportion of elderly citizens. The department recently acquired a new Sutphen SP70 platform truck and a Freightliner M2 rescue, with a state-of-the-art fire station under construction.
The department includes 15 line personnel—12 firefighters (all EMTs or paramedics) and 3 Lieutenants who are certified paramedics—along with three administrative staff: Fire Chief, Deputy Chief of Operations, and an Administrative Secretary. Line personnel work a 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off, with the possibility of mandatory recall in 12-hour increments.
In 2022, the department responded to 3,077 emergency calls, with EMS calls accounting for 84%. Located in Pinellas County, the South Pasadena Fire Department is part of a county-wide system, with a central dispatch for both fire and EMS. The department maintains mutual aid agreements and regularly trains with neighboring fire agencies.
Job Requirements
Citizenship: U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Driver's License: Valid Florida driver's license
Language: Ability to read and speak English
Vision: Must pass NFPA Medical & Fitness Exam
Certifications: Florida State Firefighter II certification and Florida Paramedic certification
Major Job Functions
General duties include fire prevention, fire suppression, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical response
Routine training, study, equipment, and facility maintenance
Responding to emergency calls as assigned
Performing fire suppression and emergency medical duties according to department guidelines, including NFPA standards and Pinellas County protocols
Performance Responsibilities
Report in full uniform by 0800 hours for roll call and follow the assigned duty schedule
Respond promptly to emergency calls
Maintain high professional standards in firefighting and medical response as outlined by department policies and county guidelines
Participate in training and fitness programs to maintain job performance levels
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of city streets and geography
Proficient in firefighting and paramedic skills
Ability to follow instructions, communicate effectively, and respond quickly in emergencies
Maintain strong public and coworker relationships
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office
Competent in operating emergency vehicles and firefighting apparatus
Disqualifiers
Prior felony conviction or nolo contendere plea
Current or past suspension or revocation of driver's license
Dismissal from prior firefighter employment, except in cases of staff reduction
