Our law firm has an opening for a law clerk and we are looking for a driven individual with a desire to learn to join our team. You’ll get hands-on experience conducting legal research and preparing memoranda, which will confirm or deny the citations in an attorney’s legal brief in order to get ready for trial. You’ll also prepare subpoenas and motions, docket deadlines, and learn about filing requirements for both circuit and federal courts. Responsibilities:
- Research case law to confirming legal authority cited in legal documents to assist judges and attorneys
- Interview witnesses, consult legal experts and communicate with clients in preparation for trial
- Organize and maintain files to ensure information is up to date and deadlines are properly docketed
- Type the first drafts of legal documents, such as motions, briefs, pleadings, discovery requests/responses
- Draft legal memoranda with results of research in order to assist with the strategy for court proceedings
At the firm, the law clerk plays a crucial role in supporting attorneys in various tasks related to law cases. The law clerks report to the Regional Managing Attorney.
- A Law Clerk’s duties typically involve conducting legal research on relevant statutes, case law, and regulations pertinent to family and matrimonial matters such as divorce, child custody, adoption, and spousal support.
- Additionally, law clerks assist in drafting legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and agreements.
- Law clerks may also be responsible for communicating with clients, gathering necessary documentation, and organizing case files.
- Their role often extends to attending court proceedings, taking notes, and providing administrative support to ensure cases progress smoothly through the legal system.
- Meets with and reports to the Regional Managing Attorney regarding caseload, workflow, and productivity.
- Conducts comprehensive research on relevant laws, statutes, regulations, and case precedents pertaining to family and matrimonial law issues such as divorce, child custody, alimony, and property division.
- Assists the firm’s attorneys on assigned cases, including the preparation for and attendance at court appearances, conferences, and client meetings.
- Assists the firm’s attorneys in drafting legal documents, including pleadings, motions, petitions, agreements, and correspondence related to family law cases. This may involve ensuring accuracy, adherence to legal requirements, and proper formatting.
- Communicates with the firm’s clients to gather information, provide updates on case progress, and answer inquiries regarding legal procedures and documentation. Law clerks may also assist in scheduling appointments and maintaining client records.
- Organizes and manages case files, including maintaining electronic and physical documents, tracking deadlines, and coordinating with other staff members to ensure efficient case progression. Provides support during court proceedings, such as attending hearings and trials, taking notes, and assisting attorneys with case presentations. This may also involve preparing exhibits, filing documents with the court, and consulting with court personnel.
- Travels to courts and proceedings in central New York are required. Some travel to Albany, NY, and Saratoga Springs, NY, locations may be required.
Qualifications:
- Exhibit strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Plan to take or have already passed state bar exam
- Must have great writing skills and effective communication skills to participate in oral arguments effectively
- Ideal candidates will have taken the New York State Bar exam and are pending results or awaiting admission to the New York State Bar Association.
- Possess experience litigating family and matrimonial actions in the New York court system.
- Meticulous in a fast-paced law office and court setting.
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and record-keeping skills.
- Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility around.
- Ability to be both a team leader and a collaborator and an invaluable resource to the legal team.
- Commitment, experience, and/or skills to collaborate with a diverse, dynamic team with varied communication and learning styles and levels of experience.
- A proven ability to identify and resolve interpersonal conflicts; a willingness to energetically support the firm’s ongoing efforts to set and achieve employee goals for professional growth.
- Ability to maintain composure, negotiate, and advocate effectively in court and law offices while working on otherwise emotional and high-stress litigation matters.
