Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Monarch School Music Therapist is part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals who are expected to provide the highest caliber of instruction in individual and/or small class settings.  Increase student awareness, and enhance their cognitive and language abilities through music therapy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Focus on improving a client’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being through music based interventions.
  • Enhance student communication, promote emotional expression, improve motor skills, and increase social interactions. Coordinate these goals with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintain and oversee materials, equipment, and supplies specific to Music Therapy.
  • Provide positive opportunities for students that can translate to enhanced classroom performance and increased ability to gain from educational services.
  • Assist in the teaching and behavior management of the classroom by developing and implementing lesson plans and curriculum that are in line with IEP goals and objectives. 
  • Assist classroom teams in completing daily, weekly, and monthly communication forms and behavioral records.
  • Care for children, including supervising children when using restroom, caring for children when sick, assisting children with meals, managing student clothes, and/or assisting during bus/school transition. Clean up of bathrooms, vomit, and blood in the building as necessary.
  • Plan and organize daily 1:1 and group music therapy related activities consistent with the Monarch Model to optimize treatment program.
  • Instruct/train children in socially acceptable alternatives to negative and destructive behavior.
  • Protect children from physical and emotional harm emanating from themselves, others, or the environment.
  • Properly handle emergencies such as injury, runaway and acting out situations.
  • Teach and role model pro-social, mediation, and self-management skills.
  • Develop trusting, positive relationships among children and staff in the facility.
  • Initiate and facilitate all necessary communication with members of the team.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the clinical record through the timely completion of assigned documentation in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Attend staff meetings, treatment conferences and team meetings.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, supervision, and on-going training.
  • All required trainings, certifications and licensure must be kept current in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
  • Respect the privacy of clients and hold in confidence all information obtained during the client’s treatment.  All client-related documents should be handled in accordance with Agency guidelines on confidential material.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical and professional conduct and adhere to Agency policies and procedures.
  •  As necessary, utilize Safety Care procedures, including at a minimum, make use of the necessary Two-Person Stability Hold.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education:    Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Licensure:     Current appropriate Ohio Department of Education license for area of specialty. Music Therapy licensure from the Certification Board for Music Therapists preferred.
  • Skill/Competencies: 
    • Basic knowledge of child and adolescent development, human sexuality, family dysfunction, psychology, sociology, behavior theory and autism.
    • Pass Safety Care Core Curriculum by passing the written exam, attending the full duration of training, participating and passing the required role plays, and demonstrating the full competencies up to and including the Two-Person Stability Hold required.
    • Openness to multi-disciplinary and eclectic approaches to treatment.
    • Core Expertise: Possesses skill, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential duties of their role; keeps knowledge up to date.
    • Cultural Competency: Demonstrates awareness, sensitivity and skills in working professionally with diverse individuals, groups and communities who represent various cultural and personal background and characteristics.
    • Interpersonal Communication: Communicates clearly using verbal, nonverbal, and written skills in a professional context; demonstrates clear understanding and use of professional language.
    • Professional & Ethical Conduct: Adheres to professional values such as honesty, personal responsibility, and accountability; applies ethical concepts within scope of work and adheres to Agency policies and procedures.
    • Collaboration & Teamwork: Functions effectively as a member of a professional team that includes employees, clients and family members.
    • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Recognizes problems and responds appropriately; gathers information and sorts through it to identify and address root cause issues; makes timely decisions.
  •  Experience:  Combination of education, training and/or experience in working with autistic children.
