Based in Winston-Salem, NC; Eastern North Carolina;

The North Carolina Association of Educators seeks committed staff to fill the position of Project Organizer to work on two of NCAE’s most ambitious and exciting projects yet, a majority union recognition campaign aiming to build the largest majority local in NCAE history in just 1 year, and campaigns to build power in Eastern North Carolina. This project is part of NCAE’s strategic plan to build a movement of majority locals in order to win power both locally and statewide.

Project Organizers identify, recruit, train, and coach building level leadership, drive member recruitment and engagement, and support organizing campaigns to win real improvements for public school staff and students. Project organizers are on the front lines of NCAE’s efforts to organize the public education sector in the South and will spend the majority of their time in the field working directly with member leaders.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Organizing Manager/with support from the Lead Organizer, the project organizers support the local affiliate’s organizing programs, including but not limited to:

  • worksite leader recruitment, development and training through regular worksite visits, home visits, and 1:1s. 
  • membership recruitment and engagement.
  • building worksite and district level organizing structures.
  • identifying and organizing on specific issues in order to win real changes and build the strength of the union through collective action.
  • building positive relationships with leaders and staff and advancing the knowledge and skills of leaders. 
  • other direct organizing tasks, implementation of centrally developed and locally delivered training programs, and local training programs, 
  • contributing to an organizing team culture that is innovative, hungry to learn, and inspired to fight to defend and transform our public schools.
  • performing other duties as assigned.

Project organizers may also be asked to support statewide campaigns, trainings, and initiatives.

Skills and Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills: a deep understanding of trust-building, maintaining strong relationships, and the ability to communicate with people across differences
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to be adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meeting frequent and tight deadlines
  • An excellent collaborator and team player
  • Commitment to the values of NCAE, public education and the labor movement
  • A willingness to work nights and weekends when needed
  • Driver’s license and insured vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a member leader or staff organizer with experience recruiting new members and/or building organizing committees in labor, community, or electoral organizing environments
  • Experience organizing in North Carolina and understanding of the North Carolina community/cultural/political landscape particularly in assigned area(s)
  • Experience building multi-racial and cross-class organization
  • Spanish speaking

Compensation: 
This is a temporary Project worker position of the NCAE/NCSO staff union with a daily rate of pay of pay of $241.98 OR for current NCAE members, the member’s current salary. 

Duration: 1 year from the employee’s start date
