The Investment Operations (IO) team within the Investment Office (INVO) is responsible for middle and back office enabling functions to support and manage the Public Employees' Retirement Fund (PERF) and Affiliate Funds, and drive our CalPERS mission. The Investment Services team is currently seeking an Associate Investment Manager to be dedicated to the Total Fund Data Management team. This leader will play a critical role in supporting INVO by providing expertise in building an INVO data governance model, data modeling, data aggregation, and analysis. This role requires a meticulous individual with a strong analytical mindset and a deep understanding of data governance. The Associate Investment Manager (AIM) will implement a range of checks and controls to ensure strict oversight of the data consumed and processes to meet the fund's strategic objections and operational requirements.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Managing a team and overseeing the day-to-day post-execution trade activity for public fixed-income and equities transactions, associated functions, and related work of the post-trade operations team.
  • Daily management of order management systems, trade confirmation tools, custody and accounting reports, market and regulatory issues, broker-dealer operations, custodian operations, bonds, stocks, and tax.
  • Support new products, investments, and ideas. Analyze requirements and implementation considerations for the team and surrounding business units.

Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience in asset management or pension fund industry.
  • Experience with investment products, tools, and technologies to support trade operations, investment processes, vendor and market data management, data integrity, and data governance. 
  • Experience in change management.
  • Knowledge of investment strategies, security types, and vendor management practices.
  • Flexibility to handle new functionality and learn new skills to support investment strategies or products.
  • Ability to interact effectively with senior executives and portfolio managers to evaluate, execute, and implement investment strategies in an operationally efficient manner to mitigate risk.
  • Ability to define and oversee operational process improvements as needed either through the implementation of technology tools or automation of manual processes.
  • Advanced degree or certification preferable (e.g. CFA, CAIA, MBA, CPA, FIA, Investment Foundations).
