Job Description
The Research Associate is responsible for conducting research, writing, conference planning, and other organizational tasks for the futures lab and Future Security program at New America. The Futures Lab at New America seeks to enhance national security decision-making by employing a comprehensive set of anticipatory tools—such as forecasting, wargaming, and scenario planning—to provide policymakers with clearer insights into future threats and effective strategies for addressing them. Primary RA responsibilities include research and organizational tasks for the lab's pilot project: forecasting nuclear futures for the new U.S. submarine-launched cruise missile system (SLCM-N).
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Assist the Project Director with identifying experts in nuclear weapons strategy, operations and tactics to serve as subject matter experts; coordinate with the Department of Defense and other relevant agencies and think tanks for SME recruitment.
- Provide administrative support surrounding event logistics for the Futures Lab, including recruiting speakers and planning events.
- Conduct research and analysis on a range of security, technology, and foreign policy issues.
- Track legislation and government policies affecting SLCM-N deployment and U.S. nuclear policy.
- Assist in preparing and managing the SLCM-N forecasting grant reporting requirements for project funders. Maintain and track budget expenditures and prepare budget reports for the SLCM-N Forecasting Project and other Futures Lab at New America and Future Security Program projects.
- Contribute to writing of the final report of the SLCM-N Forecasting Project, which will include a literature review of US-Russian and US-Indopacific security dynamics and obligations, as well information about prior nuclear-tipped cruise missile deployments. Edit the draft report and coordinate revisions. Organize aspects of publication and distribution of the SLCM-N Forecasting Project Final Report.
- Prepare correspondence, memos, website and social media content, and provide administrative support for program initiatives on behalf of the Project Director
- Provide input into website, blog, social media, and podcast creation and updates.
- Maintain accurate records of all activities, budgets for initiatives, briefings, intern contact information, and other reporting requirements
OTHER DUTIES: - The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as dictated by events and circumstances.
QUALIFICATIONS: - A bachelor's degree or higher
- Relevant research experience (including volunteer experience)
- Demonstrated interest in issues related to foreign policy, national security, or technology issues
- Excellent writing and communication skills; social media experience a bonus
- Research and data analysis abilities
- Candidate should also be able to work as part of a team and coordinate with other program staff, fellows, and the broader New America community
- Demonstrated ability to develop sound arguments and write clearly and concisely
- Highly detail oriented, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, exceptionally well organized and highly self-motivated
- A strong communicator and highly collaborative with exceptional relationship management skills
- Ability to effectively function in a fast-paced environment with multiple changing priorities
- Must have confident demeanor and excellent rapport when interacting with all levels of staff
- Must be able to prioritize and demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and provide quick turnaround against high-pressure deadlines
